Can Nearsighted Divers Wear Glasses While Freediving?

Updated: Apr 18

Yes! Nearsighted freedivers have two good options:

  1. Wear contact lenses underwater

  2. Use a freediving mask with prescription lenses

My Personal Experience

Before getting LASIK surgery, I used both methods for years. While contacts give you clear vision, they can sometimes shift or even wash out during dynamic apnea or deep dives. If you choose contacts, always bring extra pairs just in case.

Key Things to Know About Prescription Freediving Masks

  • Low-volume masks (best for freediving) CAN be fitted with prescription lenses

  • Unlike scuba masks, most freediving masks use single lenses, but many models still support prescriptions

  • Most brands offer standard prescription lenses, but options for astigmatism are still limited

Buying Tips for Freedivers

Since prescription masks are personal gear, dive centers won't provide them for courses or fun dives. Expect to pay HKD 200-500 for prescription lenses.

Pro tips:

  • Some shops can install lenses same-day, others need 1-2 weeks

  • The lower the mask volume, the harder it is to fit strong prescriptions

  • Many freedivers prefer contacts for maximum field of vision

Our instructors often help students choose and fit the right mask - just ask!
